One of BYU's most enjoyable traditions is Hike & Light the Y. Since 1924, hundreds of students and alumni alike have participated in lighting the Y every BYU Homecoming. In 2016, the Y and trail were renovated, and new permanent lighting was installed. Cosmo and other BYU VIPs join in the fun and hike alongside the students. After the hike, free hot cocoa and donuts will be provided.
Free shuttle service is available from the roundabout east of the Wilkinson Student Center to the trailhead. The first 800 participants will recieve free BYU lanterns.
The hike is moderate difficulty, and hikers should be prepared with proper shoes, water, and a flashlight.
Alumni and friends are invited to take part in a century-long tradition and hike the Y anytime during Homecoming Week, Oct. 14-19. Take a selfie at the top (post it using #hiketheY), then come to the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center and receive a Hike the Y souvenir pin. The Y will be lit each evening of Homecoming Week. Pin supplies are limited.
