Hike & Light the Y
Come Join Us!
October 14, 2025 — WSC Roundabout
This October, join us for one of BYU’s oldest traditions, the annual Hike and Light the Y event! Since 1924, thousands of students and faculty have joined in this tradition during BYU Homecoming week. Connect with the university and each other as you hike, and make sure to say hi to Cosmo!
The first 1,500 participants will receive a 2025 Hike & Light the Y flashlight. Donuts and hot chocolate will be provided afterward at the bottom of the Y.
"Like the sun with her spectacular sunrise and glowing sunset, the lighting of the 'Y' represents the rise of the incoming student and the setting of the graduating senior." — Anonymous
We’re providing a FREE shuttle service to get you to the trailhead—no parking stress required!
🚌 Shuttles begin at 5:30 PM from the Wilkinson Student Center roundabout (just outside the WSC).
⏰ The last shuttle leaves at 7:00 PM, so make sure to arrive on time.
🚫 Parking is extremely limited at the base of the Y, so we strongly encourage using the shuttle.
Grab your friends, wear white, and we’ll take care of the rest!
What to Wear for Hike and Light the Y:
👟 Sturdy shoes – The trail is steep and uneven, so wear something with good grip.
🤍 WHITE clothing – Help light up the mountain! White reflects light and makes the “Y” shine brighter.
🧥 Layers – It cools down fast after sunset. A hoodie or jacket will keep you comfortable.
🔦 Flashlight or headlamp – We’re giving flashlights to the first 1,500 participants, but bring your own just in case.
This is the annual event where students and faculty come together to hike to the Y during Homecoming week.
Hike and Light the Y is one of BYU’s oldest and most cherished Homecoming traditions. Since 1924, students, faculty, and alumni have hiked to the iconic Y on the mountainside to symbolically “light” it with flashlights, creating a glowing display of unity and school spirit.
It’s more than a hike—it’s a celebration of where we’ve been, where we’re going, and the BYU community that connects us all. Whether you’re a first-year student or getting ready to graduate, this is your chance to walk in the footsteps of generations of Cougars.
Want to be part of one of BYU’s most unforgettable traditions? Volunteer for Hike and Light the Y! You’ll help create a smooth, memorable experience for hundreds of students, all while being part of something meaningful and fun. From greeting participants to passing out flashlights or cheering hikers along the trail, there’s a role for everyone. Plus—volunteers still get to enjoy the hike, the view, and the donuts!
